School Visits
It’s a pleasure to visit schools and interact with students. I love hearing their comments and observations.
Grades 2 – 6: A slide-illustrated behind-the-scenes view of how my picture books are made. Topics include research, using primary sources and accurate online references. I stress the importance of revision during the writing process – how everyone gets better with practice. My goal is to inspire kids the way my subjects have inspired me.
Grades 3 to 6: “Getting Started on Your Picture Book Biography”
In this one-hour workshop, using examples from my own books and others, I show students how to structure their own picture book biography. I cover “the hero’s journey,” plot, conflict, emotion and other storytelling tools.

I’ve spoken at events sponsored by SCBWI, ALA, NCTE, The Howard Zinn Book Fair, The UCLA Writers’ Program, and more. Topics have included: using picture books to inspire future change-makers, the craft of writing narrative nonfiction, and persevering in your writing career.
